Professional basketball’s ‘record for most 3-pointers made by a rookie’ LG Organic Award “Challenge 100!”

Changwon LG guard Yoo Yoo-sang has set a new record for most three-pointers in a season by a rookie in the Korean Professional Basketball League (KPBL).

Yoo Yoo-sang scored 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds to help LG win 94-70 in a regular season home game against Anyang Jungkwanjang at Changwon Gymnasium on Monday.

In particular, he hit two 3-pointers in the fourth quarter to record his 89th and 90th 3-pointers of the season, setting a new record for most 3-pointers in a season by a rookie in the history of professional basketball.

The previous record was 88 by Shingi-Ki in 1998-1999 and Kim Min-gu in 2013-2014, but Yoo Yoo-sang, who had tied them two days earlier against Wonju DB, became the new record holder.

With only one more to go, all eyes were on his fingertips from the start, but Yoo didn’t make a three-pointer until late in the game due to the pressure.

But with 2:42 left in the fourth quarter, he hit a three-pointer on his fifth attempt to make it 84-67, his 89th, and then another with 1:32 to go to reach 90.

After the game, Yoo told broadcaster SPOTV, “The fans must have been waiting for my three-point shot from the beginning, so I apologize for making them anxious. Thanks to their support, I think I was able to shoot without pressure and break the record,” he laughed.

“I would be lying if I said I didn’t feel pressure. Even if I try not to think about it, there were about 10 people talking about the record when I entered the court today,” he said, adding, “I was able to find my form while rebounding.”

“I think I can get to 100 (three-pointers) if I don’t think about it,” Yoo said, adding that he’s not ambitious and emphasizing that “even if the shots don’t go in, I can still do other things like I did today, so if I play to the situation, the record will follow.”

With the win, LG secured second place and a direct playoff spot in the four-team playoffs, while Yoo Yoo-sang’s rookie of the year race against Park Moo-bin (Hyundai Mobis) also received a green light.

“It feels good to continue the winning streak, but let’s forget about it. If we keep playing our game, I think both the streak and my record will follow,” he said, adding, “I will continue to show my good form.”
