Manchester United are targeting Benfica talent João Neves, 19.
“Manchester United watched João Neves play in the derby between Benfica and Sporting and are convinced of his talent,” Portuguese media outlet Hecord reported on Friday (April 15).
“Neves is no longer a hot prospect. The interest in him is growing because there is no doubt about his ability already. United are one of the clubs that have been keeping tabs on Neves and are already convinced that he will be an asset to the squad led by Eric ten Hagh.”
United sent a scout to observe Neves in last weekend’s derby against Sporting. Neves scored a dramatic equalizer in second-half stoppage time with the hosts trailing 1-0. Benfica came from behind to win the game, and Neves was the man of the match in the victory.
Neves was promoted to the first team last season and has since established himself as a key player, earning the trust of head coach Roger Schmidt. Neves’ talented performances have attracted the attention of several European clubs.
Manchester United were the first to recognize Neves’ talent and are interested in him, while Italian side Juventus are also keeping tabs on him. The Red Devils have yet to make an offer, but are expected to make an offer to Benfica in the January winter transfer window if the club’s sale process is finalized.
However, Benfica will not be in a hurry to sell Neves, who is one of their top talents. Neves has been a Benfica fan since childhood and is eager to help the club win the Portuguese Primeira Liga title.
Neves is currently under contract with Benfica until 2028 and has a release clause worth a whopping €120 million.
